Novillero New Release Celebration
So yeah, uh, there's a new Novillero disc coming out this week, and I won't shut up about it. It really should be a big deal to you; you read this very randomly updated blog and I'm gonna assume that you sort of enjoy that Devil's Music The Kids Are Digging So Much Nowadays. I'm going to make the leap of faith that a band that somehow manages to be rocking, crafstmanly tuneful, and gritty and visceral and soulful as hell is something you'd dig; (lemme be the old dude from Entourage for a second: "Does that sound like something you might enjoy?")
That's what Novillero brings to the table. A song like "Abbey" or "Insomnia" might strike you at first for how tuneful the Winnipeg 4-piece can be...but then a song like "Gaining Ground/Losing Sight" comes in and rips and pops and comes unglued with biting social commentary like "You climb the ladder, you wait in line/Until eventually you get downsized/So all you up-and-comers better listen right/'Cause you're gaining ground and losing sight." That would be enough for a lot of bands, but dammit, we're doing mod soul here, and that means that you better be able to shake your butt to these songs, and it means that if you close your eyes and listen close, that you might be able to hear Eddie Floyd or William Bell or Sam & Dave nailing these same songs.
Here, let me play you a clip as illustration. This is Mod Soul right here, as personified by a 1960's unknown band called The Action. Folks who fancied themselves "mods" like The Who and The Small Faces said the The Action were the only true mod band that mattered, and if they didn't get a fair shake in the recording studio you can still hear on this song what the commotion back then was all about:
You got your nods to British Invasion pop lurking in there, but you've also got them wed to an awesome soul groove that practically drags you by the collar to the dance floor. That's mod soul, baby, and that's what Novillero does here thirty years later. The band have finally given us a taste of some of the new tracks at their myspace site. The title track is absolutely aces, and "Life in Parentheses" has a great hook. Finally, "Paco Rabanne" (you teenybopper can go google that, sadly) is an awesome instrumental the group have been performing since at least 2006.
At any rate, we're getting close to release day, so how about some Novillero hype? Put these guys right up on the top shelf next to The Blakes as the very most kick ass and important rock and roll bands on the planet right now.
"The Art Of Carrying On" (The raveup finish here just absolutely slays me every damn time.)

....and a killer (if unlikely) cover. Yeah baby!
